- Q&A with LIT2LIFT: Meet Bostonâs Black Fitness Duo
If youâve ever taken a class with LIT2LIFT, you know the vibe: music pumping, weights moving, and a contagious energy that makes you want to push harder (and laugh through it). We caught up with Boston-based founders Darren Stephens and Jonady St. Germain to hear how their fitness journey began, what makes their training dynamic so unique, and what's next for LIT2LIFT. FSB: Tell us about your backgrounds â where did your fitness journeys begin, and how did you come together to create LIT2LIFT ? J:  We went to the same high school together and then the same college together. Partying, dining halls, ordering out â we gained a lot of weight. We didnât feel confident, so we started hitting the gym, mostly cardio at first, and eventually lost 50â60 pounds between us. That made us realize maybe we had something we could share to help other people. D:  LIT2LIFT started during winter break in 2017. We had this great workout, and afterwards, sitting in the car at 10pm at night, we started brainstorming different business ideas. We wanted others to feel those same endorphins we were feeling. We knew âLITâ had to be part of it, and LIT2LIFT  was born. FSB: How has your own fitness journey shaped your work and how you inspire others? J:  Since I wasnât always fit, I can really empathize with clients who are just starting. My goal is to create a comfortable, motivating environment so people feel good where theyâre at and want to keep going. D:  For me, itâs confidence. Losing weight gave me confidence I didnât have before, and now I want to help other people become more confident in themselves. FSB: How has your dynamic as a duo shaped your approach to fitness? J:  Because weâre such close friends (everybody thinks weâre brothers), we understand each otherâs style. We joke, finish each otherâs sentences. We have a close bond that translates well into our class. D:  We bring that party vibe to a workout. Weâre high-energy,, weâll push you to grab heavier weights, and weâll motivate you the whole way through. Being a duo makes that energy even stronger. FSB: Whatâs the âsecret sauceâ in your coaching style that keeps people coming back? D:  Obviously weâre a Black duo, but I think itâs our Caribbean roots. Weâre always dancing, vibingâitâs the vibe of who we are and it comes through in class. J:  It shows up in our music and our programming. Itâs outgoing, it's different, it's creative. When you walk into a Lit2Lift class, weâre trying to get you as lit as possible. FSB: Youâve evolved into content creatorsâwhatâs the biggest lesson youâve learned from building your brand online? J:  Social media is the freest way to market yourself. You can create long lasting relationships through social media. Itâs a double-edged sword sometimes, but itâs the reason we get to do what we do. Almost all of our clients come through it. FSB: How do you balance fun, engaging content with real fitness value? D:  Itâs a fine lineâweâve definitely done both sides of it. Everyone does fitness content, so we had to find what separates us from other fitness content creators. J:  At first, we did crazy challenges, but people were like, âYeah, weâre not trying that.â Once we leaned into the funny, more relatable side of fitness, it felt more like us. Weâre funny, weâre always laughing, and it translates. FSB: Whatâs been your most unexpected moment since starting LIT2LIFT ? J:  Group fitness. We started out just wanting to be trainers. The pandemic switched that up for us, and we realized group classes let us lean more to our personalities. D:  Instagram. We started on YouTube, we gained 1000 subscribers and it started trickling into Instagram. Thatâs the biggest shock for me, just seeing how much weâve grown. đĽ LIT2LIFT isnât slowing down. Their goals (amidst both wedding planning)? âMore content, more classes, more clientsâjust keep growing,â  says Jonady. But exercising in the heat requires a little extra strategy to stay safe, hydrated, and energized. We asked Boston-based instructor London Mercer âknown for her heated sculpt and Pilates classes, as well as outdoor summer pop-upsâfor her best advice on how to keep your cool while getting your sweat on. Hydration Is Everything âIâd say the biggest thing would be to hydrate even more so than you usually would,â says London. That means starting earlyâ drink water before class , not just during or after. She also recommends adding electrolytes to your water to help replenish what your body loses through sweat. âI like Go Ultima ,â she shares. âThey come in individual packs or jars, and you can find them at Whole Foods.â Be Intentional With Your Movement While outdoor classes bring the fun (and a great view), itâs important to tune into your body. âDuring class, focus on your breath,â London says. âBeing intentional with how you move and breathe can help regulate your heart rate in the heat.â Translation? Slower, more controlled movements can help you stay grounded and avoid overheating. Cool DownâLiterally After class, itâs tempting to collapse onto the couch or skip straight to brunch, but London suggests taking a quick cold shower first. âEven if itâs just for a minute or so, it really helps reset your body temperature,â she explains. - Meet Kelly: Fitness Pro, Running Coach, and Barry's Favorite
This month weâre spotlighting a fitness leader who brings grit, heart, and curated coaching to every mile and every class: Kelly Whittaker-Cummings . As a longtime Barryâs Boston instructor and certified running coach, Kelly is known for her smart programming, welcoming energy, and unwavering dedication to helping others chase big goals. We caught up with Kelly to talk about her fitness journey, what makes Bostonâs running scene so special, and how to find joy in the processâwhether youâre walking into your first Barryâs class or training for your next marathon. (BONUS keep reading for a JULY 2025 Barry's promo!) Q&A with Kelly How did you get started in fitness, and what drew you to the Red Room specifically? I was an athlete in high school and started distance running in college, so was searching for something that combined fitness and community when I moved to Boston in 2012. Boutique fitness was still pretty new back then, so I started teaching spin classes at a local studio and was introduced to Barry's when it opened in Boston. I was hooked immediately. I left my corporate job in 2014 to help manage and coach at Barry's Boston, and Iâve never looked back! How would you describe your classes in three words? Challenging. Intentional. FUN. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people working hard and having fun. Youâre also a certified running coach, what would you tell someone whoâs new to it? For beginners, I say: start small. Run five minutes straight or aim for one mile. Then build from there â maybe a 5K, maybe a marathon! Celebrate every bit of progress. Iâve been coaching runners for almost seven years now, and I learn from them just as much as they learn from me. Itâs a collaboration. What makes Bostonâs fitness and running community so special? Boston is a true running city. The sense of pride and support here is unreal. From organized run clubs to solo runners taking advantage of the first sunny spring day â the energy is infectious. And of course, thereâs nothing like the vibe around Marathon Monday. Whatâs one passion of yours outside of fitness? I love spending time with my family â including my two golden retrievers who are basically oversized teddy bears. We love long walks and weekends at our beach house in Maine. Iâm also a big reader (send recs!) and love trying new restaurants, cooking, and napping. Priorities! How do you care for your mental health â especially when you give so much energy to others? Itâs taken me almost 39 years to really learn how to give that energy back to myself. Running is usually my moving meditation. I love getting lost in my thoughts or a good playlist on a long run. I also work with amazing therapists whoâve taught me how to set boundaries â like staying off Instagram and email in the evenings, scrolling less, and reading more to recharge. Whatâs a long-term goal youâre working on? This year Iâve pushed myself with both endurance and strength â I completed an ultra marathon in June and did my first powerlifting meet in May! Coming up: another marathon in Maine this fall and another lifting comp. Long-term, I want to keep building my run coaching business, push my clients in the Red Room, explore partnerships and brand collaborations, and help more athletes chase their goals.
