As September comes to a close, we’re wrapping up National Yoga Month by spotlighting Evolve Power Yoga in South Boston. We spoke with Evolve Instructor & Studio Manager Veronica Monteiro and RYT200 Yoga Instructor Shay Pepe to hear how yoga supports the mind and body, tips for beginners, and how to keep your practice strong this fall.

Why National Yoga Month Matters
For both Veronica and Shay, this month is about more than movement—it’s about mindfulness.
“At Evolve, we know yoga is important for our minds. Sure, the movement is fun and challenging, but the mindful connection is what keeps us practicing,” Veronica shared. “In this day and age, we are always overstimulated—yoga helps us reconnect and recenter to our souls.”
Shay added:
“National Yoga Month is a chance to raise awareness about the holistic benefits of yoga—not just for the body, but for the mind and spirit as well. Personally, I celebrated this month by stepping back into the role of a student and reconnecting with my own practice. It’s been a reminder to keep learning and appreciating the full spectrum of what yoga offers.”
The Mind–Body Connection

Yoga’s physical benefits are clear, but both instructors emphasize the mental and emotional impact.
"You can absolutely show up for a workout,” Veronica shares, “but yoga can also help reduce anxiety and allow for better clarity in your life."
Shay agreed, adding that presence is one of the biggest gifts of practice:
“By connecting breath to movement, you naturally disconnect from the outside world. For 45 minutes to an hour, you’re fully present—and that small daily window of presence can be incredibly nourishing mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.”
Staying Consistent This Fall
With busy fall schedules, consistency can feel tricky—but both instructors have strategies.
Veronica suggested:
“Show up for yourself. Book a class with a friend, schedule a weekly calendar block, or set a realistic goal like once a week. What matters is 'why' you’re practicing—let that guide your commitment.”
Shay recommends habit stacking:
“Link yoga to something you already do. If you take a walk after work, turn that into a walk to yoga. If you have a morning coffee ritual, consider doing yoga first and then treating yourself to that coffee afterward. It becomes a natural part of your routine rather than an overwhelming add-on.”
What Makes Evolve Power Yoga Unique

Evolve is more than a yoga studio—it’s a Southie community.
“We’re a yoga-first studio,” Veronica said. “Our instructors are creative, intentional, and committed to helping students show up exactly as they are.”
Shay echoed this, highlighting both the energy and the people:
“We’re one of the hottest studios in the area and that intensity helps you sweat, detox, and feel invigorated. Evolve is a place where you can count on both consistency and creativity, and that’s what makes it truly unique.”
Tips for Beginners at Evolve
If you’ve never stepped onto a yoga mat, both instructors agree: you don’t need to be perfect, you just need to start.
Veronica’s advice is simple:
“You don’t need to be an expert before you start! Show up with an open mind—we’ll guide you through the rest. Our heated classes are definitely hot, so just hydrate and let yourself focus on tuning inward.”
Shay encourages new students to connect with their teacher and embrace the community:
“Let your teacher know you’re new—we’ll offer extra guidance and make sure you feel comfortable. I also recommend sitting near the front. You'll set yourself up to learn and grow with confidence.
